Traffic is not the problem

Most sites that need more visitors are quietly losing the ones they already have.

Doubling traffic doubles the leak. It is almost always cheaper to fix the page than to buy your way past it.

When enquiries are down, the first instinct is to go looking for more visitors. More content, more ads, more posts. It is a reasonable response and usually the expensive one, because it treats a conversion problem as a volume problem and pays per visitor to avoid fixing it.

The arithmetic

A site converting at one per cent needs twice the traffic to double its enquiries. The same site converting at two per cent needs none. The second route is almost always cheaper, faster and permanent, and it compounds with every visitor who arrives afterwards.

This is not an argument against acquisition. It is an argument about order. Fixing the page first means money spent on traffic afterwards is worth roughly twice as much.

Where visitors are lost

The losses are rarely exotic. People cannot tell what is being offered. They cannot find the price, or any signal about it. They cannot see evidence that anyone like them has bought this before. The next step is vague — get in touch rather than book a call — or it sits three scrolls below the point where they had already decided.

Each of these is a content decision before it is a design one, which is why redesigns so often change how a site looks without changing what it does.

Ask the people who left

The most useful research is not a heatmap. It is asking five people who considered you and chose someone else what they could not find. The answers are usually specific, mildly embarrassing, and fixable in an afternoon.
