Nobody notices the details until they are missing

Craft is invisible when it works, which is why it is the first thing cut.

No client has ever asked for better easing curves. They ask why the site feels cheap, which is the same request.

Craft has a marketing problem. When it is present nobody can point to it; the work simply feels considered. When it is absent nobody can name what is wrong either — they describe the result as cheap, or generic, or somehow off. Because the benefit is unnameable, it is the first line questioned when a budget tightens.

The things nobody asks for

Consistent easing across every transition. Hover states that resolve at the same speed everywhere. Optical alignment rather than mathematical. Type that tightens as it grows. Focus states that exist at all. A considered state for the moment the connection is poor.

No brief has ever requested these. Every site that feels expensive has all of them, and every site that feels cheap is missing most of them.

Why consistency does the work

Most perceived quality comes from repetition rather than invention. One easing curve used everywhere reads as intent. Four curves chosen ad hoc read as accident, even to someone who could not tell you what an easing curve is. The eye is very good at detecting inconsistency and very bad at explaining it.

This is why craft is cheaper to build into components than to apply page by page. Decided once, it is nearly free thereafter. Decided per screen, it is never finished.

The honest argument

Craft is not perfectionism and it is not decoration. It is the difference between a site a visitor trusts with a deposit and one they close. That is a commercial argument, and it is the only one worth making — because the aesthetic argument has never once survived a budget conversation.
